The Cape Epic - what is it all about?
It is an annual multi-staged
mountain bike race held in South Africa. It is a recognised event in the
world of top level international mountain bike racing and is widely
regarded as one of the foremost challenges in mountain biking; the 600
pairs of riders compete over an off-road course that climbs over 16,000m
in approximately 900km.
Why
Compete
in short... to raise money
for our hospital in Malawi.
The Beit Cure International
Hospital desperately needs to raise funds for the completion of a 3rd
operating theatre and provision of a dedicated physiotherapy unit for
the children and their families that we serve.
We needed £100,000 for the
project and have already raised half the total, but need to raise a
further £50,000 as soon as possible.

A lot of hard work. Cycling
this distance off- road demands that one tries to retrain one's body to
endurance mode. The only way is to spend many hours on a bike! As it is
dark in Malawi by 6.30pm, and work starts at 7.15am, it means a regular
program of pre-dawn training and long weekend rides away from a very
supportive family!
Racers compete in pairs and
John is doing the event with a visiting surgeon from the UK - Paul
Harnett. Fortunately the scenery is beautiful and if ever you break-down
there are always dozens of smiling children from nearby villages to
support you! Some photos can be seen in
the gallery.
For those that are interested.
